Most of the employees of Barrel Market are volunteers or part time workers. They take time out of their busy schedules to work here because they believe in the sense of community that a cooperative food market can bring to a city.

Adrian Gonzales is one of those employees. He is one of our buyers and focuses on bringing the best fruits from the area into Barrels. Adrian focuses on obtaining organic fruits from Oxnard as he feels the farms there have the best quality and freshness. He frequently travels in his spare time to the farms in the Oxnard area to meet and create lasting relationships with the farmers there.

Adrain is the owner of Simi Valley Pool Repair. He lives in Moorpark with his wife and two daughters (and their poodle Mindy).

Say hello to Adrian if you see him working in the market, and feel free to ask him any questions.

5 Reasons Why You Should Eat Local Food

5 Reasons Why You Should Eat Local Food

People now prefer eating local food. Restaurants are promoting foods made of local ingredients. Here are the reasons why you should also eat local food

It is the natural way of eating food

Before, people had no choice but to eat local food. Now we have easy access to foods grown in various countries, but it wasn’t the case before. When you eat local foods, it means that you will be eating seasonally. It is a natural way of ensuring that you have a variety of foods in your diet. Eating the same type of food all the time can cause nutrient deficiencies and food sensitivities.

Local foods taste better

A fresh garden tomato tastes much better than a tomato from superstores. The tomatoes that are industrially farmed are picked completely green. Then they are taken to a room pumped with ethylene gas. This turns the tomatoes into red, though they are not ripe. Naturally ripened tomatoes are tastier.

It reduces your footprint

When you eat foods that come from far away, you cause lots of harm to the environment. It takes trucks or planes to transport the food. Plastic boxes are also used for transporting and storing food. But if you choose foods that are grown nearby, you can cut down the fossil fuels that are needed in transportation.

It saves money

When you buy foods that are not grown locally, you will have to pay a higher price. So, eating local foods saves your money.

It is healthier

The nutrient content of fresh food is higher than that of older foods. Local foods are fresh as they don’t have to travel long distances. You will have different choices available when you eat locally grown food, instead of being fixed to the same diet.

Eating local foods is a healthy option. It will also help your community to grow. You should choose local foods over industrial foods or those that come from distant places.
